12 week weight loss kick start program

I'm going to be honest, I don't know how to feel about New Years resolutions. On one hand, I am psyched that we want to improve our health and I'm ready to set goals that we can achieve! On the other hand, I worry about the rush of gimmicky dieting fads flooding our social media feeds. With so many 'lose weight quick' schemes on the market promising unfounded results, here at Lifestyle Medicine Maine, we know that we can do this better!


We're here to break the dieting cycle, offering evidence-based weight loss that is sustainable in the long run, facilitated by a Lifestyle Medicine Professional. That's why Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM of Lifestyle Medicine Maine is offering a facilitated 12 week weight loss kick start program for 2024! This is not a fad diet, it's a medically facilitated transition towards a plant predominant dietary pattern, and it's going to be fun!

If you've been following along with the blog, then you know that success in weight loss is less about will power, and more about setting up systems and practicing new habits. That's why we are going to take a systems based approach to practicing and cultivating new habits each week that can be layered together to form the ideal weight loss toolbox. We'll laugh, play some games, and engage in weekly challenges to get a kick start on our weight loss goals!


And don't worry, this won't just be another lecture series where we stare at slides! Throughout this 12 week kick start, we'll cook together (virtually), discover how to master weight loss meals, create grocery shopping lists, and support one another inside of the Lifestyle Medicine Maine Community Chat page!

While not required, Kick Start program members will have the opportunity to stop by the office on Tuesday's to weigh in each week (find Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM of Lifestyle Medicine Maine inside of Root to Rise PT is Scarborough, Maine). Note that our scale measures up to 500 lbs and you will have the option of choosing whether or not you would like to know your weight.


If you have hypertension or type 2 diabetes, then we strongly recommend that you come in and meet with Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM in the office so that we can discuss monitoring metrics and make medication adjustments as needed. If you have any medical conditions and/or take any prescribed medication, then you need to work closely with your Primary Care Provider (PCP) and/or Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM of Lifestyle Medicine Maine.


We'll also have the opportunity to monitor our lab markers (kidney function, liver function, ApoB, high-sensitivity-CRP, *Lp(a), B12, and vitamin D) at the start and after 12 weeks on the program!


Read more about labs that often improve on a plant predominant dietary pattern:

  • LDL cholesterol and ApoB (part 1 and part 2)

  • High-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP)

  • *Lp(a) will only be monitored at the start as this marker is less likely to change (read more about these markers on the blog).





Who should not join? We shouldn't join if we:

  • are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant in the next 12 weeks or breastfeeding

  • have significant kidney or liver disease (eGFR below 30 or cirrhosis)

  • are struggling with uncontrolled mental illness

  • have an active cancer diagnosis

  • are taking Coumadin (warfarin)



 

What to expect





What is included?

  • Weekly live (30 minute) sessions with time for Q&A on Sunday mornings at 10am EST (12 total)

  • Access to the Lifestyle Medicine Maine Support Group (chat page) for ideas and community support with like-minded individuals

  • Explore weekly modules that are exclusive to kick start members

  • Optional weekly weigh-in's in the clinic on Tuesdays in Scarborough, Maine

  • 2 Sets of lab work (drawn in the clinic on a Tuesday): Baseline and after 12 weeks

  • 2 hand's-on assessments in the clinic by Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM and initial health review (including current medical conditions and medications)

  • The option of adding weight loss medication to those who qualify (in general: BMI > 30 or BMI > 27 with other health issues)

  • Dive into new recipes and learn to prepare plant predominant meals with virtual cooking demos that you can follow along with

  • Explore all things calorie density and ways to eat less calories while still feeling full

  • Engage in fun games and gain group support as we make this transition together


What you'll need?

  • 30 minutes each Sunday at 10 am EST (session will be recorded and made available for later viewing)

  • a kitchen scale

  • a daily B12 supplement (1,000 mcg B12 sublingual lozenge in the form of cyanocobalamin)

  • a smart phone if you are using the YouAte App (not required, but helpful)

  • 2 in-office visits to meet with Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM of Lifestyle Medicine Maine for lab draws and physical assessment

What is the difference between joining Lifestyle Medicine Maine as a member versus joining the 12 week kick start program? Members living within 30 minutes of Portland, Maine benefit from at-home visits (which span from physical exams, to lab draws, to help with grocery shopping and meal prep, with 1:1 personalized hands-on help), which is not included in the 12 week kick start program. Active membership offers additional 1:1 support. Kick start participants will only be able to meet with Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM on clinic days in Scarborough, ME on Tuesday's starting January 2nd.


Can I continue working with Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM of Lifestyle Medicine Maine after the 12 week kick start? Absolutely, simply sign up for a Lifestyle Medicine Maine membership and we'll get started right where you left off!


Will Lifestyle Medicine Maine offer future kick start programs? We're not sure yet!


Is there a discounted price for the 12 week kick start program? The kickstart program is already discounted at %15 of our service fee, so no additional discounts are available for this program.
