Burmese Lentil or Chickpea Tofu

Title: Burmese Lentil or Chickpea Tofu

Burmese Lentil or Chickpea Tofu

I got this recipe with Herman and I absolutely love this! I've made tofu out of red lentils, french lentils and split peas. My favorite way to prepare them is to cut them into chunks and place them in the air-fryer (no oil needed) on 400F for 15-20 minutes. So yummy!

*Word of caution: we can't do this with any bean. Watch the video below to learn why!

You can make this with:

  • split peas

  • red lentils

  • french lentils

  • brown lentils

  • chickpeas

Servings 3 | Calories per serving 100 - 150

Ingredients

100 grams of lentil or split peas or chickpeas

250 grams of water

Recipe Instructions

  1. Soak the beans overnight in plenty of water.

  2. The next day, drain them and discard the water.

  3. Add the soaked beans to a high speed blender along with 250 ml of water and any spices that you would like.

  4. Pour the mixture into a non-stick frying pan and stir in 1/2 tsp of salt. Bring it to a simmer, then reduce the heat and cook it for 2 to 5 minutes, stirring it constantly with a spatula. The starches will sink to the bottom and stick, so it’s important that you keep stirring to avoid it from burning. Continue cooking until it has formed into a thick paste that doesn’t level out in the pan anymore and holds on to the spatula. If it’s still runny, just cook it a little longer. Once ready, transfer the mixture to a dish and let it set for an hour (ideally in the fridge) before using.

  5. It takes about 1-2 hours to set. Once set, it should maintain it's shape and easily fall out of the container. If it is runny or soft, then blend it up with additional water and try cooking it again (go back to step 3).

Spices I have tried adding:

  • garlic granules

  • onion granules

  • paprika

  • hot chili powder

  • Italian seasoning
